WHAT IS SEMAGLUTIDE?
Semaglutide is a medication to manage type 2 diabetes. The FDA approved it for such under the name brand Ozempic. Along with treating diabetes, physicians noticed that Ozempic (semaglutide) also resulted in significant weight loss. Soon after, the FDA approved semaglutide for weight loss under the brand name Wegovy.
Generally, patients will receive a semaglutide injection once a week. For convenience, these injections can be self-administered at home or administered by a medical professional into subcutaneous fat. The most common areas for semaglutide injections are just below the belly button or on the thigh.
Semaglutide is a long-term medication for healthy weight loss. Over time, it helps patients achieve steady, lasting results. When combined with healthy habits, it can support long-term success in maintaining a healthy weight.
How Does Semaglutide Work?
Semaglutide mimics a naturally occurring protein called glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) agonists. The body naturally releases GLP-1 into the bloodstream after we eat. This “gut hormone” plays a significant role in metabolism, hunger, and satiety. It works by signaling the brain to feel full, slowing down digestion, and reducing hunger pangs. This makes it easier to eat less and maintain steady energy levels throughout the day.
Additionally, by mimicking GLP1, semaglutide slows down the release of sugar into the bloodstream, which causes the body to burn more fat. It also helps delay stomach emptying, leaving you feeling fuller longer. This helps reduce appetite and overall calorie consumption.

HOW DOES SEMAGLUTIDE HELP ME LOSE WEIGHT?
Slow Down Digestion
Semaglutide helps you feel full longer by slowing down how quickly food leaves your stomach. This process, called gastric emptying, keeps food in your stomach longer, so you feel satisfied and eat less often.
The speed at which food moves through your stomach and intestines is part of a process called gastric motility. Gastric motility involves the muscle movements and digestive actions that push food through your digestive system. Semaglutide’s effect on this process can sometimes cause stomach-related side effects, like nausea when people first start taking it.
Research shows that the impact on gastric motility may lessen after about 20 weeks.* This could explain why many patients notice these side effects go away after a few months of treatment.
Reduce Appetite
Semaglutide works by imitating a natural gut hormone. This gut hormone is responsible for signaling fullness to the brain. When you eat, your body releases a hormone called GLP-1, which binds to specific receptors in the hypothalamus—a part of the brain that controls appetite. Semaglutide activates these receptors, prompting the hypothalamus to send messages that you are satisfied and no longer need to eat. This mechanism helps reduce hunger and curb overeating effectively.
Improve Metabolism
Semaglutide improves metabolism by helping the body use energy more efficiently. It lowers blood sugar levels and reduces fat storage. Additionally, it curbs hunger, leading to less calorie intake. Over time, this supports better weight management. As a result, the body burns fat instead of storing it, boosting metabolic health.
Reduce Cravings
Semaglutide reduces cravings by mimicking a hormone called GLP-1, which signals the brain to feel full. Additionally, it slows down the quickness of food's digestion, helping you stay satisfied longer. As a result, hunger signals decrease, and cravings are easier to manage, supporting healthier eating habits. Additionally, semaglutide may also reduce cravings for alcohol, shopping, and other addictions by influencing reward pathways in the brain. Because semaglutide mimics the GLP-1 hormone, it can also affect the brain’s dopamine reward center. Dopamine is a neurotransmitter responsible for feelings of pleasure and reward, often associated with addictive behaviors.
Semaglutide can decrease the intensity of reward-seeking behaviors and cravings by modulating dopamine release. Additionally, it may enhance impulse control by improving how the brain processes signals related to satisfaction and restraint. This dual action on appetite and reward systems could explain why some individuals taking semaglutide report reduced cravings for alcohol, compulsive shopping, or other addictive tendencies.

How Much Does Semaglutide Cost?
Compound semaglutide costs much less than its identical name-brand equivalents (Ozempic and Wegovy).
The exact cost of your weight loss injection depends on the dosage. Semaglutide typically comes in different doses. To help decrease side effects, your doctor will start you on a lower dose of semaglutide. One month of semaglutide costs $333. This semaglutide price requires a three-month commitment. The price may increase by $50 as you progress in your weight loss journey and get on higher doses. Most patients remain on the $333 price for three months or longer.
Is Semaglutide right for me?
Ideal candidates for semaglutide are adults with a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or higher. Also, semaglutide is a good option for individuals with a BMI of 27 and one or more weight-related complications. These complications include insulin resistance, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and heart disease. We do not recommend Semaglutide for people with type 1 diabetes, a family history of thyroid cancer, or a history of pancreatitis. Our experienced providers will evaluate your medical history and unique needs and help you determine whether semaglutide is right for you.
Semaglutide Tips And Aftercare
Following a healthy diet and maintaining regular exercise is essential while taking semalgutide. Eating a sufficient amount of protein is vital for muscle mass retention. Also, drinking plenty of water can aid in fat loss and prevent side effects. Consult with your doctor to devise a plan that works best for you.
Can Semaglutide improve my skin?
As it turns out, semaglutide comes with many benefits besides weight loss. One of the most exciting benefits is an improvement to the skin. Recently, dermatologists have prescribed semaglutide to treat drug-resistant skin conditions. According to Dr. Julie Maughan, dermatologist and director at Skin Sculpt Medispa and BodyShaping, Semaglutide may improve inflammatory skin conditions, such as:
- Rosacea
- Dandruff
- PCOS
- Psoriasis
Skin tags
hidradenitis suppurativa (Acne inversa)
How Does Semaglutide Improve Skin?
Dr. Maughan explains, “The medical field is still unraveling the full impact of Semaglutide. However, the link between losing weight and improving skin is well documented. It comes down to inflammation. Fat cells create proteins called adipokines. These proteins play a role in inflammation. More fat cells mean more adipokines in the
bloodstream and more systematic inflammation.”
Obesity-related inflammation can cause or exacerbate inflammatory skin conditions like psoriasis and acne. Losing weight on Semaglutide reduces obesity-related inflammation. This improves skin conditions associated with inflammation. One study likened semaglutide to killing “two birds with one stone.” This study measured the effects of adding semaglutide to traditional skin treatments. The study Found “a relevant and long-lasting improvement of plaque psoriasis, which was previously resistant to biologic therapy.”

SEMAGLUTIDE FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Semaglutide is proven safe and highly effective under medical supervision, with fewer side effects than most weight loss medications.
Common Semaglutide Effects
Common side effects include upset stomach, nausea, vomiting, heartburn, gas, diarrhea, or constipation. Doctors minimize the side effects by starting the patient on a lower dose of medication. The dose gradually increases until you reach the ideal dose for optimal weight loss.
Most patients maintain their weight loss while taking the medication. However, when patients discontinue taking semaglutide, many regain weight. Obesity is a chronic disease. It can last someone’s lifetime, even if they regularly diet and exercise. Because obesity is a chronic condition, it requires chronic treatment. As Novo Nordisk, the makers of Ozempic and Wegovy put it, “Obesity is a chronic disease that requires long-term management, much like high blood pressure or high cholesterol.”
Semaglutide is made by Novo Nordisk and sold under the brand names Ozempic and Wegovy. Because semaglutide is so popular, Novo Nordisk cannot produce enough Ozempic or Wegovy to meet demands. To combat these shortages, the FDA allows compounding pharmacies to make their own “compound semaglutide.”
Compound Semaglutide uses the same active ingredient (semaglutide) as Wegovy or Ozempic. To use a cooking metaphor, compound Semaglutide uses the same ingredients and recipe as Ozempic or Wegovy. It’s just baked in a different kitchen.
Although compound drugs lack FDA approval, compound pharmacies must meet specific requirements under the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic (FDC) Act requirements. At Skin Sculpt Medispa and BodyShaping, we use reputable compounding pharmacies and closely monitor our patients to ensure their weight loss journey is both safe and effective.
Semaglutide and Wegovy are the same drug but used differently. Semaglutide treats type 2 diabetes, while Wegovy is specifically for weight loss. Both work by reducing appetite and helping control blood sugar. Wegovy is a higher-dose version of semaglutide, designed to support significant weight loss in eligible patients. Typically, Ozempic is prescribed to assist type 2 diabetics with lowering blood sugar. Although it’s primarily prescribed for managing type 2 diabetes, many patients experience weight loss as a side effect due to its appetite-suppressing and digestion-slowing effects.
Semaglutide and tiirzepatide (also known as Mounjaro and Zepbound) are both used for weight loss and diabetes. However, tirzepatide targets two hormones (GLP-1 and GIP), while semaglutide targets only one (GLP-1). This difference may make tirzepatide more effective for some people. Both work by reducing appetite and controlling blood sugar, but their mechanisms vary. Patients may experience fewer side effects with tirzepatide because it works more naturally by targeting two hormones instead of one. However, some find semaglutide easier to tolerate as it has been used longer, and its side effects are well-studied.
Semaglutide injections should be stored in the refrigerator between 36°F and 46°F. If needed, they can stay at room temperature for up to 28 days. Also, keep them away from sunlight and heat. Lastly, store them out of reach of children for safety.
Drinking plenty of water while using semaglutide is important. Aim for at least 8–10 cups (64–80 ounces) daily to stay hydrated. However, listen to your body and drink more if you feel thirsty. Also, staying hydrated can help reduce side effects like nausea and support overall health during treatment.
Semaglutide starts working in the body right away, but noticeable effects can take a few weeks. Patients may feel the appetite suppression working within the first week. Weight loss results may begin after 4–6 weeks, depending on dosage and lifestyle changes. Full benefits, like steady weight loss, are usually seen after several months of consistent use with a healthy diet and exercise.
To inject semaglutide with a regular syringe, start by cleaning the injection site with an alcohol pad. Choose a spot on your stomach, thigh, or upper arm. Next, pinch a fold of fat at the site using your thumb and forefinger. This ensures the medication goes into the subcutaneous layer, not muscle or deeper tissue. Insert the needle at a 90-degree angle (or 45 degrees if directed by your provider) into the pinched area. After injecting, release the pinch before removing the needle to ensure proper delivery. Finally, dispose of the needle safely. Always follow your healthcare provider’s instructions for safe and effective administration.
“Ozempic face” is a term used to describe facial volume loss that some people experience after significant weight loss, often associated with medications like Ozempic (semaglutide). This can lead to a hollow or aged appearance. Sculptra and Dermal fillers can restore lost volume, enhancing facial contours and providing a more youthful, refreshed look.
